General Information

Columbite-tantalite, a dull metallic ore, is referred to as "coltan." When coltan is processed, it transforms into a heat resistant powder that can hold a high electric charge. There are a few places in the world where coltan can be mined such as Australia and Brazil, but 80% of coltan reserves are found in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Coltan is extracted by artisanal minors.

Today, coltan is widely used in electronics all over the world because of its distinct electrical properties. Although it is also present in other devices, the two primary goods are cellphones and laptops.
